Just a few things before I go out golfing for the first time in 2005 ...

• I truly believe that John Bolton is toast. I wouldn't be surprised at all if he withdraws his name from consideration for the UN post in the next few days. The longer he twists slowly in the wind, the more his personal reputation suffers.

• The confrontation in the Senate over various judges' nominations promises to get extremely ugly:
Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist (R-Tenn.) has threatened to change Senate rules to ban filibusters for judicial nominations, clearing the way for them to be confirmed by a simple majority vote. But Democrats have threatened to bring the Senate to a virtual halt if Frist invokes what has been called the "nuclear option" on such nominations.
If the solons of the Senate wish to live Jefferson's credo of "That government is best which governs least," they're on the right track.

• Oh, and that renowned environmentalist, George W. Bush, is celebrating Earth Day today.
