Penn State loses to Northwestern--Northwestern!--and is given the only touchdown it recorded. Even the officials seem to be feeling sorry for Joe Pa.

I thought that Paterno should have retired at the end of the 1997 season because it was clear that he had no idea what was going on with his players. He would've finished with a decent 9-3 season and earned the respect of football followers everywhere.

Now, however, PSU may be stuck with him because there's no way he's going to want to retire after (what I think will be) a 3-9 season. No, he's going to want to retire after a fairly successful season--and that would include a bowl appearance against a very carefully selected opponent.

Given his patently clueless approach this season, who knows how many years it will take for that scenario to occur?
