Needless to say, I'm not happy about this.
A change in the way the federal government calculates financial aid could result in middle-class Americans paying more for college at a time when tuition costs are rising sharply.

The revisions, which [fortunately] would go into effect in 2004, could reduce the amount that families may deduct in state and local taxes when calculating their family income.
Middle and upper class taxpayers make additional payments to colleges in order to subsidize those less able to pay. I have no problems with this, but I've always thought that the additional monies paid should be thought of as a charitable contribution.

Of course, the plutocratic politicians would never support anything like this. A tax cut (on dividends no less) is much more to their liking.
